We got together at a friend’s house for a Memorial Day barbecue last week. With the sun shining, chicken and brats on the grill, and everyone hanging out in the backyard, it was the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Watching my little girl running through the bright green grass with the other children put a big smile on my face. Sometimes the simple things are all you need. Of course, any get-together is an excuse for me to try a new recipe. Like a low carb dipping sauce? My contribution to the barbecue was some gluten-free cajun onion rings with spicy low carb dip. The recipe for the onion rings is coming soon (update: find it here!), but the low carb dipping sauce was such a hit that I had to post it on the blog as soon as possible. I had several people that don’t even cook very often asking me about the sauce. Often times that’s the biggest compliment.

Before I knew it, I saw people dipping everything and anything – onion rings, chicken, brats, even chips – into this awesome low carb dipping sauce. It was originally supposed to be a low carb dip for onion rings, similar to the kind you see with blooming onions at restaurants. But, I quickly realized that this healthy dipping sauce goes with pretty much anything. Onion rings? Of course. Chicken, steak, or a burger? Yes. Zucchini fries? Absolutely. Raw or roasted asparagus? Sure, why not? Gluten-free bang bang shrimp? Yep – just use a low carb breading for it. With mayonnaise as a base, this spicy low carb dipping sauce is naturally keto and gluten-free. A homemade or paleo mayonnaise will be the healthiest and most natural option, but you can absolutely use regular store bought mayo as well. When I’m not using paleo mayonnaise, I like the organic kind from Trader Joe’s, which is made with expeller pressed oil and has no artificial ingredients. I like this low carb dip to be pretty spicy, but you can reduce the cayenne pepper in the recipe if you prefer a more mild flavor. It does taste better if you let it sit for at least an hour, or better yet overnight, to let the flavors develop, but keep in mind the heat will increase with time as well. It’s also highly customizable based on what spices you add to it.

Finally, the great thing about this spicy low carb dipping sauce is that it’s practically foolproof and requires virtually no time to throw together. Mix the ingredients together and you’re done. You can estimate the amounts, too. Add a little more of this or a little less of that. No problem. It will still turn out great as long as you keep it mostly similar to the original recipe. So, what kinds of appetizers do you want to try with this spicy low carb dip?
